Management of COI for RECs and SGCs

The potential for conflicts of interest can be addressed by instituting proactive regulations that would preclude certain individuals from holding particular positions and would provide clear guidelines for management in the event of employment prerequisites being overlooked or ignored, or employment regulations being breached.
Institutions can employ the services of a dedicated agent/agency/commissioner to identify and manage conflicts of interest, to invoke institutional policies on conflicts of interest, empowered to institute disciplinary action and criminal proceedings as needed, to revoke decisions retrospectively, and to effect dismissal.
The response to incidents of conflicts of interest, thus, requires that institutions have clear, unambiguous, informed and regularly-communicated codes of conduct for all their employees and officials, both prospective and current.
Process for identifying and managing conflicts of interests
Step 1: Assess risk of potential internal COI of REC / SGC
Step 2: Assess risk of potential external COI (researcher and funder)
Step 3: Assess for COI in the Research Process
